The day was still overcast and the glacier, where it was cracked or fissured, showed a beautiful blue. The deeper the fissure, the darker the blue. Our two ice guides fit us with crampons and strapped us securely to them. The crampons had eight or ten metal points about an inch and a half long, and were hinged in the middle. After a short safety talk, we were led onto the glacier, where we stomped about for almost an hour
For our disembarkation at Cape Horn, which had not been mentioned in the original trip brochure, we had to get up at 0600. The sea was quite rough, and, although we could see the buildings and albatross monument on the hill, we were not sure we would be able to land. We watched from the anchored, rolling ship as the crew’s zodiac motored to shore and as they checked out the stairs leading up from the landing spot. Their orange life vests were quite visible. |
