We took a day to walk a 7-mile loop that included a portion of Hadrian’s Wall, starting at the “town” of Once Brewed, which boasted of two structures. .. Great Britain is covered with walking paths; most of them cross private land, and the owners are most tolerant of the hikers. The map we were following included a path through a farm. It took a couple of tries to get the right farm, but eventually we walked down the lane to the farm buildings. There were several wooden gates and we were wondering which one to use when the farmer appeared. He was very friendly and told us to go through that gate, across the yard, over the stile, and across the sheep pasture. Sue asked, “Through the gate with the silhouette of a bull?” The farmer replied, “Oh, there’s no bull there now. There’s usually a picture of the wife.” |
